How To Reset Oil Life/Oil Change Light On GMC Sierra (2015-2021)

Hey everyone, welcome to my site. So I went to change the oil on our work truck for the first time last Saturday. And now I figured I'd share the procedure with you if anyone were interested in seeing how to reset the oil life light yourself in a GMC Sierra after an oil change.

So after you have finished the oil change, the last thing to do is reset the oil life system. It's typical for people to aim for a mileage number to hit for oil changes, but Sierra's computer actually accounts for your driving habits and time between oil changes. According to the manual, the truck will give you a 600-mile warning when determining you need an oil change.

How To Reset Oil Life/Oil Change Light On GMC Sierra

For your info, this operation work for the fourth and fifth generations of the GMC Sierra 1500 2500HD (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 model years).

With Gas Pedal

The fastest way to reset the oil life on this GMC Sierra is by turning the key to the on position and mashing the GAS pedal three times right quick without starting the truck.

With Steering Button

For 2015-2018 GMC Sierra

Time needed:3 minutes.

In this section, I will show you how to reset the oil life on a GMC Sierra. This is a 2018 model here, but it will be the same in a few different years. So we're going to do it using the buttons on the right-hand side of the steering wheel, and I'm going to focus on the dash. So let's get started.

Turn on your car without starting the engine
If your vehicle has an ignition button, press and holds the Start/Stop button for 5 seconds without step on the brake pedal
Press the ◄ navigation button
Push the left button on the steering wheel to go into the cluster menu
Go to the INFO
Highlight and then hit ✓ on the INFO
Find the OIL LIFE
Next, go into your Oil Life monitor screen and you can use the up-or-down control button to scroll into it
Press and the ► right button
After that, go ahead and press on the right button so there it's gonna give you an option to reset
Press the ✓ button
So now we would want to do is just hit the ✓ button to reset
Select YES
Then a confirmation message will appear, select yes to confirm and you're done

For 2019-2021 GMC Sierra

This section will show you how to reset oil life for the latest generation of GMC Sierra which is equipped with an Uplevel display.

Turn the ignition on with engine off

Next, scroll all the way down to the OIL LIFE
After that, all you got to do is press the thumbwheel down on Oil Life and it will reset for you

With Cluster Button

Follow the instructions below if your vehicle is equipped with a Base level display and without a steering button:

Turn on the ignition
Twist theTRIP button clockwise or counter clockwise to brings you through a whole bunch of different things in your menu. So spin it till you get to the OIL LIFE

Next, hold down the TRIP button until the Oil Life display changes to 100 percent
